FPV Freestyle: My First Mountain Session
There’s something about flying FPV in the mountains that no simulator can prepare you for. The thin air, the unpredictable wind, the sheer scale of everything around you.
The Setup
- Frame: TBS Source One V5 (5-inch)
- Motors: T-Motor F60 Pro IV 1750KV
- Props: HQProp 5x4.3x3 V2S
- Camera: DJI O3 Air Unit
Lessons Learned
1. Altitude Affects Everything
At 2,500m elevation, the air is noticeably thinner. My quad felt sluggish compared to sea level. I had to bump up my throttle curves significantly.
2. Cold Batteries = Less Flight Time
6S 1300mAh packs that normally give me 4-5 minutes were dying at 3 minutes in -5°C conditions. Keep your batteries warm until you’re ready to fly.
3. Signal Penetration Through Rock
The DJI O3 handled terrain remarkably well, but I lost video twice when flying behind a large rock formation. Always have a spotter.
The Footage
Shot everything in 4K60 with the DJI O3. Post-processing in DaVinci Resolve with a custom LUT I built for alpine conditions.
The golden hour shots were worth every frozen finger.
